Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking

Trip Information
  • Duration27 Days
  • Trip Grade Moderate
  • Altitude 5,364m
  • Best Time March to May and Sept to Nov

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is for trekkers wanting to experience a serious pathway to Everest Base Camp. It is considered the ‘classic route to Everest base camp’. As well as experiencing the extraordinary landscape, culturally rich village and farming life, and the plants and animals of the forests, you will come away with a greater sense of achievement and added credibility from your peers for not taking the easy way. You will share the trails with farmers going to work, school children going to school and porters, both man and beast, carrying village supplies. Buddhist monasteries, mani walls (prayer inscribed rocks) and water driven prayer wheels spiritually enlighten the way. Remember to always walk to the left of the mani walls and you will be rewarded with added respect from the locals.

This trek follows the path the first mountaineers took on their successful Everest Expedition in 1953. Yes, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa came this way, as did following mountaineering expeditions until flights to Lukla offered a short cut. Nowadays, because of time constraints, many trekkers choose to fly to Lukla. But starting your trek in Jiri exposes you to an entirely different landscape to that from Lulka to Everest. And this extra trekking will help you to acclimatise to the altitude you will experience as you approach Everest Base Camp.

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek starts with a sightseeing and preparation day in Kathmandu. The following day we start with a drive to Jiri, which is located to the east of Kathmandu. Jiri is only 187 kilometres away but the ride will take eight to nine hours – such is life in mountainous Nepal. Along the way the Arniko Highway provides great views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal peaks to the north.

From Jiri we trek westward to Namche Bazaar before heading north towards Everest Base Camp. This trek in itself is an amazing experience but there is still so much more to come. We now leave the Everest Base Camp trail to head eastward over Chola Pass to get to Gokyo and its beautiful lakes. Depending on the time of the year, some will be frozen solid.

If you have the time and energy, this trek is one of Nepal’s finest. It is a visual, cultural and spiritual experience like no other but you will also come away with a real sense of achievement. You have succeeded in doing the ‘classic route to Everest Base Camp’, and beyond.
